It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen loved the English countryside. In particular, she had a soft spot for Chawton, the picturesque Hampshire village where the author of Pride and Prejudice spent the last eight years of her life and rediscovered her artistic passion. Chawton is also the place where I have the privilege of living, just around the corner from Jane's cottage.
The English countryside is the constant backdrop of Jane Austen's novels, that are all set in the glittering Regency era.
It's therefore only right that one of the biggest festivals celebrating annually Jane Austen's literary heritage and the Regency era, the Jane Austen Regency Week, should be held between Chawton and the nearby town of Alton.
Follow me in this video where I explain how this festival turns for a week this lovely part of Hampshire into a global Austenian hub and get a taste of the glamour of the Regency era.
